A lot of people have a fear of clowns. Some of it stems from the movie 'IT' based on Stephen Kings book of the same name.
Perhaps it's the fact that clowns paint their faces and look nothing like the people they are underneath and that freaks people out. I mean, if a clown struck someone, could they be identified once their makeup is gone? Nope.....
Also, how do clowns put up with all those kids??! I mean, kids are great, until they move and speak and start hitting you.

Coulrophobia is a mental condition concerning the fear of clowns. It has attracted a large amount of interest in the entertainment media and on the Internet, where websites have been created to specifically address the condition.
In discussions of causes of coulrophobia, sufferers seem to agree that the most fear-inducing aspect of clowns is the heavy makeup that conceals the wearer's identity.
Clowns often appear in horror movies, but unlike the phobia, the intention here is usually to frighten viewers by letting the horrific take the disguise of something normally associated with fun and happiness. Nonetheless, there are also characters who are recognized in part due to their fear of clowns.

I've no idea but they scare me too! My Grandad used to dress up as a clown and buy me matching clown outfits for clown conventions(!) Maybe that's why they freak me out, they always smiling atcha and you can't read their true facial expressions....evil little things!

Nobody over the age of 5 is really afraid of clowns. They just say that. I have friends who say the same thing, and I don't believe them. It's stupid.

Because they're parents (like mine) got them or took them to a birthday party when they were much too young and clowns attended then they got scared of them.
I hate clowns. My parent's got me one for my 1st birthday party and I almost died.
I also saw the movie it and it confirmed my fear of clowns when I was 7 or 8.

They tend to traumatize children. A humanoid being constantly annoying you to laugh with him/her, and they CONSTANTLY have a smile on their brightly colored faces. Aside from that, they play that eerie repeating carnival music, and they used little distractions to keep you attention on them when the real action was happening elsewhere. yes as you can tell, I also dislike clowns for the same reason. I always felt like killing them when I was little. I think I took things too seriously then.

Two reasons:
Either they find a clown's constantly laughing unnatural
OR
They have seen the movie IT.

because clowns have an evil side that you wouldn't normally see in a normal person, the persona of a clown is that of happiness but really is it? most comedians are actually depressed people on medication.
