The purpose of life is to give pleasure to the Supreme life, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is the reason we exist. We are His eternal, spiritual energy, and our constitutional position is to serve His desires. At the present time we find ourselves covered by material bodies and minds and therefore bewildered by the illusory energy. In this state we think we are these temporary bodies and minds. With this misidentification as the basis for our consciousness, how can we know what is the purpose of our life? If a madman thinks himself to be someone he is not, how can he understand what he should or should not do? First we have to understand who we are before we can know what the purpose of our life is.

There are basically two paths. One path is to think we are the body and when the body dies we are finished also. In that view, what possible purpose could anyone's life have? If we all return to dust in the end, any endeavor to make sense of life is just a madman's game. Instead of having a true purpose in life, the rationale becomes simply to 'enjoy' life, which is nothing more than animal life.

On the other hand, if we are actually eternal and the body is just the vehicle we have for a few years, then our purpose becomes very clear. Our purpose is to understand our eternal nature and what our relationship is to the Supreme. This is the process of self-realization-- purification of consciousness. The advantage of human life is that we are able to inquire about the Absolute Truth and the purpose of life. The animals and other lower life forms cannot do this. But if in the human life a person doesn't make this inquiry, he is no better than an animal.

This is a very good question and I wish you all good fortune on your journey to spiritual realization.

im sure you know that this is impossible to answer...so here it goes.

according to some people our existence is absurd and there is no reason for it. for others we are a cosmic experiment.

i think we really have no answer for the question and that is proabably good.

the purpose of our existence is sometimes assumed to be something that we have no control over and we are just fulfilling someone elses will...and only rarely our own.

however, there are those who believe that we just exist and come to define what is purposeful for ourselves...in other words....there is no purpose other than the one we define for ourselves individually and/or as a group.

what does this mean?

well, lets say you have two people with identil lives...and one of those peoples lives suck crap and the others life is good. the crappy life person asks ....what is the purpose of our existence...because lif sucks...while the other person nevr even considered the question. they both have identical backgrounds...so why the difference?

because..they each took the same experience and interpreted in different ways. when their parents divorced...the unhappy person assumed it was because of him..while the happy person assumed it was the best for everyone. the happy person kept on assuming situations and life in non personal and non threatening ways...so..he never realized that life really sucked...at least according to the unhappy person.

while unhappy man assumed all situations were a personal attack etc...and eventually asked the question you asked?

Well we exist simply because we were created. Our purpose well...thats up to us I think. I mean, for all I know, each of us, no matter how insignificant we me be, may have a important role in the scheme of life. But I think for now we should worry about making our own purpose. That way, even if never find out or role in life, we can say we gave our lives meaning.

We exist only as a stepping stone in the evolutioary chain, and to give some future intelligent beings something to laugh about.

To figure out the answer to that question ;).
Or....
No reason, purpose, or cause. It is just a phenomenon that ends shortly after it began.
Or.....
There is a purpose to our lives but we don't know what it is and so we must seek to find it.

It depends... each person is here for a different reason, wouldn't you think? Is it my job to tell you why you are here? I think not. I might be able to help you along the road to discovery. What do YOU think?

I drink, therefore I am.
