I think it's something I'd enjoy doing, and I have a lot of time on my hands right now. I don't especially want to get involved with a formal program, but I'm afraid to simply offer here, as the parents would worry that I'm some kind of predator.

I'm not a teacher, but I'm fairly well educated. Due to some health issues, and severe financial limitations, I don't feel as if I'm giving back to society right now, and my brain is my greatest asset, so I think this would be great.

Is it a pipe dream?

Douglas, no, I don't want to get paid. But I would enjoy working with one or several people over a period of time, and that won't work here. As far as parents, *I* would insist on communicating with them before becoming involved with their kid, and I wouldn't do it unless I felt that it was REAL parents I'd communicated with!

Bridgett,
Sadly, math is the area in which I'm least confident. But here is a website that I found enormously helpful during my last two algebra classes:

It's not a pipe dream. Giving back in anyway is excellent. A lot of libraries do online tutoring programs, you could ask to join at yours. Or, you could make your own website. Maybe you know some kids in your area who would like help? Or some of their friends? Explain your desire to your parents, I'm sure they would support you in any way they can.

You're in the right place right now! So no, it's not a pipe dream. You don't need to "offer" help, just answer right here, right now. And remain anonymous. Don't give out your e mail address, or write to someone elses personal e mail address, because then even I would think you might be some kind of perverted predator. Just post your answer here, and move on, and help the next person.
Even if you did offer your help over the normal e mail channels, you wouldn't get any takers. People aren't dumb you know. If you want to help, this is a good web page to do it at. But don't expect to get "paid" anything more than with the satisfaction that you have helped someone today. And that should be enough for you. If not, then maybe you do have a problem???
Only you know the answer.

No sounds like a great idea. Especially for kids who can't get out to an after school program. Make a 360 page for yourself and invite all those kids who are always looking for homework help here and have them share you with their parents. Put in some references and job history so that they can see you are qualified and real. Also you might e-mail the people over at yahoo and ask them to put a specific category of homework help that way you can find people and connect with people who could use your services. Also just keep advertising by posting your question periodically and keep answering questions so you don't lose all your points.
