The story is about an American and a Russian competing in the world Chess championship, and the woman that is trapped between them. Friends missed the first run on Broadway, but they saw it a few years ago Off-Broadway. The show and costumes are not at all flashy, but the music makes up for that.

Lyrics by Tim Rice are clever, and music by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus is creative and innovative. It's not all in the style of the Bangkok song, which always makes me think of the Engineer's songs in MISS SAIGON. Rice is, of course, a Broadway veteran who has worked on many hit shows including the current Disney show AIDA. Unfortunately I don't know of any other shows that Andersson and Ulvaeus worked on.

The most similar musical in terms of style to CHESS is an even more obscure show called NINE by Maury Yeston, who wrote the other musical of The Phantom of the Opera, PHANTOM.
