I don't find it offensive, but I could imagine it has something to do with all the swear words, drug influences, and women bashing. I just take it all light heartedly, but some don't. I know that all rap isn't like that but, there are a lot that are.

Glad you asked :-)

If you meant "why do rappers try to offend people", I'd say the answer is that it's kind of fun to listen to music that irritates your parents! We all did it, but eventually grew out of that phase.

Additionally, rappers enjoy being rebellious. They and their fans feel like they are at the bottom of the heap in society. Since most people feel that they deserve better, they react by expressing their anger against something besides themselves. It's always easier to blame someone else for your problems, and that is very appealing to all of us.

If, however, you meant "What is offensive about Rap", there could be several answers.

First, many of the performers have a very angry outlook which they express strongly in their music. Those of us who like music to be *fun* don't enjoy hearing rappers spout their rage. Other rappers have a very boastful attitude. Many seem to glorify the baser side of life, namely violence, lust and material goods. Even they guys who aren't angry or boastful are perceived as imitating the angry ones.

Second, good music contains both melody and rhythm. However, rap has mostly abandoned the melody portion. In doing so, they have thrown out centuries of experience on things like counter-point, harmony, chord progression and other appealing parts of our music tradition.

Make up your mind...

Are you asking about RAP or are you asking about MUSIC.

RAP isn't music... because it lack one of the essential criterion to fit the classic definition.

MUSIC must have Rhythm, Melody and Harmony.

Fire must have Oxygen, heat, and FUEL...

Rap is missing a MELODY.

Therefore... if you want a serious answer... ask a SENSIBLE question.

If the real question is why is RAP offensive, then the obvious answer is "the lyrics"... and the fact that it is NOT music.

I don't think it is offensive. The artists just rap about what they see and experience.
