When criminals fish for your bank account information by claiming to be a bank or some other financial institution and requesting your account number and other personal information. Usually the e-mail or website will have a legitimate look to it, making the victim believe that it is real and they are safe to give out their information.

phishing is a website that makes you think it is another site. Such as Ebay or bankning sites. It is set up illegaly to fool you into giving it account information.

Its like Fishing, as in casting a wide net and hoping you catch something but not knowing what you'll catch. It refers to sending out junk fake emails asking for information like account numbers and passwords to see if someone is gullible enough to fall for it.
