I tried only changing one side once on the front of my truck. One side wasn't as worn and I wanted to see how it worked out.
Turns out when I applied the brakes the truck would always pull to one side. I went ahead and changed the other side.

Yes you should change both sides Most brake pad manufacturers install a clip on on pad to tell you when the pad wears down thats what your hearing but remember that all the wheels on the bus go round so change them all. Front brakes cost between 9-39Dollars Rear brakes are about the same. But dont forget the labor cost. Hope this helps.

If you need to replace the brake shoes or pads whichever your vehicle has, on one side then you must do both sides. If you do not it will cause uneven wear on the new shoe/pads causing them to not last as long as they would had you changed both sides. How much do they cost, well that depends if you have brake shoes or disc brake pads and at which auto store you purchase them from. There are a few auto parts store such as Checker that will sell you a high quality brake shoe/pad which has a lifetime warranty.

properly for starters, it looks like your co-worker is in basic terms your popular minimum salary, uneducated, 0.5 assed brake tech. they're everywhere. in basic terms because of the fact he's been doing it longer than you will not recommend he knows what he's doing. Machining a brake rotor wisely actually takes a sprint ideas ability and robust training. once you are trying tension the automobile, if the noise is brake appropriate, that's purely going to make the noise mutually as braking. If that's growling utilising 20+ mph that's the two the tires or a bearing making the sound. once you gadget a rotor, the entire objective is to diminish it with out any vibration. The vibration ruins the decrease, which you at the instant are not likely to purely "sand" it out. that's the place the noise comes from mutually as machining it, the vibration. between the main straightforward motives is the reducing tip getting boring. because of the fact which you are the recent guy, it is going to be complicated to cajole all individuals to hearken to you so attempt to no longer manage the client one on one. in basic terms attempt to examine some thing new on a daily basis and quickly you will probabaly understand extra effective than your co-workers. solid luck guy.

In an attempt to be sure wear is even you should change both back brakes at the same time. Call your neighborhood auto supply store and ask for the cost of brakes.

Unless you are very familiar with doing a "Brake Job"
I suggest that you go to a reputable repair shop and
have a complete job done. There is a lot more to a brake system than just brake pads or shoes.

Sound coming from brakes don't always mean that the brake pads are worn out. If there is a high pitched squeaking sound then most likely your brakes:
(1) have glazed over from "riding" them too much.
(2) are high quality (expensive high milage) and are made from a harder materials than the lower quality (cheaper lower milage) soft brand of brake pads. Higher quality brakes tend to make more noise because they resist wear better.
If your brakes make a grinding, scraping (and down right awfull) noise then your brake pad has worn out. The noise is coming from the metal rivets that hold on the brake pad surface are coming in contact with the metal surface of your brake rotor or brake drum (depending on what style of brake system you have). This problem is bad, and expensive to repair. If this is the case then the drum/rotor will have to be replaced as well as the worn out pad.
When replacing brake pads you should ALWAYS replace both sides, the same goes for drums/rotors. Doing this will not only help in proper braking, but will also insure your safety and the safety of the fellow drivers on the road with you, and thats what brakes are for aren't they???
I hope this helped you in your quest for knowledge on brakes.
As far as price goes brake pads can run anywhere from $50 up to about $150 per side (left = two pads, right = two pads). Price depends on:
Make of car
Brand of pad
Size of pad
Quality of pad
Store pads are purchased at
Brake pads come in pairs (two pads per box) so two boxes would have to be purchased in order to replace both sides.
Drums and/or rotors can cost anywhere from $100 up to, but not limited to, $300. This price depends on:
Drums or rotors
The size of roter or drum in diameter
The make of car
Store the rotor/drum is purchased at.
Many shops that offer brake service will tack on labor prices, anywhere from $19 to $100 per axle (both left and right). This depends on the shop you go to and what special deals they offer.
Bottom line: if your brake pads are out then it is going to cost you more than you would want to pay. Brakes are the most important item on your car so don't put off getting them looked at any longer.
Good luck! I hope it doesn't cost you too much.

Do you HAVE to? No.
Should you? Absolutely!
If one side is worn tot he point of making grinding, or scraping noise, the other side is probably going to very soon.
If your brakes to the point of making noise, you will also need to replace the drum, or rotor.
If it's rear drum, you may want to take it to a shop as this is going to be a problem removing the drum. If you are not familiar with the brake system, and do not have the proper tools, you will be wasting your time.
If you have a buddy that has the tools, have them help you!
