How could Magellan have discovered Clipperton Island when he never got near to the Western Shore of Mexico?

Clipperton Island is located at 10°18′N 109°13′W is South of Mexico and West of Costa Rica. Searches on Clipperton island (wikipedia) indicate that Magellan discovered this island, yet it seems far to north for Magellan to have reach in his journey across the pacific. Does anyone know if Magellan took a significantly long dog leg north which is not widely mentioned?
