Hi Christopher. I think it depends on what kind of patriotism we are discussing here. If it is the old patriotism to a nation state that is simply a glorified tribe fighting to get all of the power it can, then yes, patriotism is way overrated. And dangerous. But if you mean patriotism to a global vision of justice and compassion where we are free citizens of a free international society that protects the rights of all while preserving the planet for our common future, then no, it is not overrated, but way over due.

How can you even ask such a question? Are you some kind of Communist? No it is NOT overrated. Do you realize what it is to have patriotism? Have you ever served your country in a time of war? Do you know what it is like to be stuck in a desert, thousands of miles from home, and to KNOW that people back home (THE PLACE YOU ARE FIGHTING FOR) hates you, hates everything about you, will spit on you upon your arrival back home?
No patriotism IS NOT OVERRATED. It should only be much more WELCOMED...

You have one sick question ......My son was wounded over in Iraq and I can tell you that the look on his face when he came home from the hospital from all the people greeting him and the other boys was worth a million.They were so proud to know that this country was behind them 100% .The hell those young men and women are going through over there,and I think the least you and others could do is to stand beside them and give them a well deserve hand shake for going over there for you and others, so you can have the rights to sit on the computer and ask stupid question like this one.......Amen
