As far as reccomending an electric guitar to start on go to rondomusic.com and check out their SSX GG 1 series of Les Paul copies or their SX SST's or SX SST FAT guitars if Stratocasters seem more appealing to you. Best bang for the buck hands down and they are great student/intermediate guitars to start on that won't set you back more than $150.00 or so.
Roland has a Cube Series of amps that have on board effects like chorus and flange as well as having some really great amplifier emulators that sound very close to Marshalls and Mesa Boogies the Roland Cube 30 is a thirty watt amp with a 10in. speaker that will be loud enough to rattle the windows in your house, it's about $250.00.
You're on your own as far as finding an instructor, however, my first reccomendations stand, buy some decent equipment to start with and you'll be less likely to quit.

best way to start well a know from experiance if you want a gutiar if you can afford it get a GOOD one that YOU like the sound and feel of don't be shy to pick a guitar upin a shop just for the feel of the neck and if you can sit down with it.

By good I mean expensive and reputable cheapest place in UK is http://www.gak.co.uk if you have a lot get a gibson SG special £500 if your budget is lower stick it out and get a encore or squier strat or tele, do not get any other 'weird' shaped guitars til your actually good and know its what you want and can understand if it is actually good in the future.

also you need an amp, a tuner and gig bag, plectrums and some leads.

learn open chords A,B,C,D,E,F,G then minor and major versiosn of them...practice chord changing even if it is A to B to C and so on

use finger excercises every time before playing guitar (ask again later for examples)

learn some songs using the open chords for example Pretty Target by the levellers.

Also learn barrechords and powerchords...barrechords WILL hurt you at first it is perfectly natural.

from then on depends which direction you want to take

good beginer songs

marilyn manson - sweet dreams, the nobodys
blink 182 - all the small things, whats my age again
metallica - for whom the bell tolls, enter sandman,
The Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop

good luck

Not only lessons, but lessons with a rock dinosaur--the kind that will make you learn a lot of complicated classic rock techniques, even though you may hate classic rock, the kind who'll make you learn the proper way to play a chord, as opposed to the easiest way. Master the "real" way to play guitar, then move into experimentation (think of Picasso). If your guitar lessons stop at power chords, and learning songs by Good Charollette or Blink 182, or whoever those idiots are, go find another teacher!

You may want to consider practicing on an acoustic first. That way you'll get a good grasp of guitar basics and will be that much better of an electric player. But acoustic or not, I would buy a chord book and practice those. Learn other's songs, but don't neglect to develop your own style. If you feel you need to, take lessons, but work on your own music outside of class besides the "homework".

As a self-taught drummer myself, i will inform you that there rather is not any 'speedy" thank you to study an device. It takes rather some persistence, practice, self-discipline, and annoying artwork. Now that being mentioned, some human beings do study quicker than others so it fairly relies upon on the guy. I even have 2 cousins that the two play guitar and the two are self-taught. My one cousin Terry practiced just about on a daily basis and picked it up quicker than my cousin Dave, who did not practice almost as plenty. Terry grew to become extraordinarily darn stable in approximately 8 months. all of it boils right down to how desperate you're, how plenty you practice, and how quickly you p.c.. issues up. My suggestion could be to get an academic e book or DVD and study some chords. in case you do it on your person you will save rather some money and you will bypass at your person p.c... Guitar instructions at the instant are not affordable at present, until you realize somebody. in simple terms supply it a shot on your person for a month or 2 and notice the form you progression. Then in case you sense you like instructions to get extra suited, then come across a stable instructor that should not be too costly. however the secret's to coach....practice.....practice! stable good fortune!

Without a doubt the first step is buy the best guitar, amp, tuner etc you can afford.
Having private one to one lessons by a like minded teacher is costly but the best way to start then just play night and day for about 5 years.
Happy plucking

dear brainless monkey,

the best way 2 start is by signing up 4 guitar lessons. then when u get better at it, try 2 join a band. if u don't feel comfortable doing guitar lessons ask some 1 u know 2 help u like a friend or a family member. if that dosen't work try buying guitar books and try 2 teach yourself, and if u do decide 2 do that remember don't get angry or frustated at yourself just have a good time trying. and who knows may b u got some talent.

Plenty of chord and tab sites on the net, go and have a look there . You'll soon learn to navigate the guitar. Then practice very hard day in day out, you may well have to stop for a few days at a time at first as your finger tips will burn it's very painfull! But they do get hard in time.
