why would someone pick their own nickname?

Maybe they don't like their name or they prefer a shorter name if the one they have is too long!
Personally I dont like anyone calling me with nicknames!

Well it's never alright to pick your own. But I like the lady's answer about moving. If your Friends all have nicknames aren't you cool simply because you are different? If not then be a geek and name yourself. I like DORK. Or Speedy, or Wile E. Or even Neck Bone, Might try TDawg. oh this one is good Billy.

It means you don't trust your current monkeysphere to give you one that you can live with.

Got to admit, as traumatic and stressful as moving can be, it's a great opportunity to anoint yourself with your own nickname. Meeting new people - "Hi, I'm , but everybody where I'm from called me ."

Because most of the time its because they don't like their first name. Most of the time they pick the short verision of their name. Take for instance my name is Candice, but my nickname that I perferr to go by is Candy. Most of the time it just means that its the short verision of someomes real name.
