According to the Gregorian Calendar (the calender we use to this day), the first "century" began with the year 101. This is because a century is exactly 100 years in length. We could not be in our "first" century until the 100 years had actually passed. So on the year 101, we "began" our 1st century. On the year 201 we "began" our 2nd century... and so on. 2001 marked the "beginning" of the 21st century. The 22nd century will begin on 2101.

The Gregorian Calendar oddly enough was "invented" in the 14th century.

However... according to the astonomical (Julian) calender a century begins on year 0 and ends on year 99. So we would be classed as being in the 20th century... that is, if we actually still used this calendar.

We are currently in the 21st century.

Even though our year starts with 20##, we are in the 21st century. You must remember that the 1st century was the years with double digits. Which came before the year 100. 100-199 was not the 1st century. It was the 2nd century.

For that reason, many people get confused.

The 21st from the years 2001 to 2100.

Explanation of my answer:

Since the roman calender was started in a time of roman numerals there was no year zero because zero did not exist as a concept and the calender was actually started at the year 1. This is why the century starts at 2001 instead of 2000.

I don't know about you, but I am living in the 21st century. The president is GW Bush and Albany is the capital of New York. This is Friday, all day, and there are 22 days left in summer.
I am still female, last time I looked and I have an IQ higher than light bulb wattage.
I could bet money you are in school. It scares me to DEATH how little kids know these days.

As others have said, 21st. To figure it out, cut off the two rightmost digits (so 2006 becomes 20) and add 1.
