I have a misdemeanor on my records for petit theft when I was 18. (almost 4 years ago.) It's the only thing I have on my records and I sort of forgot about it. I was in an interview today, and when I was filling out the application I didn't see the part where it asks about your crime history. When she looked over it, she asked me if I had any past crimes, and I said no. I had to fill out this form giving her information so she could do a background check on me. She said she wouldn't get the background check back for another 5 or 6 days, and she would give me a call then. When I got home, I remembered about my misdemeanor. I think I have a chance at saving this job. I want it so bad! It's a job at a high-scale new apartment complex. I don't know what their policy is on hiring people w/ a misdemeanor, but if it is allowable I'm sure I can fix it. Any suggestions?

Call and explain to them exactly what happened and your remorse for not being accurate. If they do a thorough check, they will find out and your honesty may be rewarded. If you don't establish contact, you may never be given the chance to explain the circumstances. Good Luck--I hope you get the job!

well, if you say nothing and they find it, you won't get the job. if you're honest and say something now, you still probably won't get the job since it is relatively recent. also, will show your interviewer that you are a liar and that your conscience got to you. true you may have simply forgotten about it but that's how it will come off to them. plus, petty theft is a concious act. were it something like DUI which is somewhat involuntary then it may be different. petty theft implies that you thought about it and then did it. makes a world of differece to them

Well, genius, if you know how to fix it do it. Get back to the interviewer TODAY, and explain what you told us. It's your only chance because it will show up, and better you tell than they just find out you lied.

ok you can say nothing and pray she don't get your record back with it on it....which probably won't happen...or you could call and explain it to her. If you don't tell her about it before she sees it on your record she will assume you lied and your probably not going to have any chance.
