Sometimes I can smell something in the air when it is going to rain soon. If the storm is a big one then I can faintly detect the change in the ionic flow that signals clouds are building up. I think of it as a smell, though it really isn't. Of course this is about as accurate as a good look at the sky.
Animals are better in tune with their environment than humans are. Only humans were killed in the Tsunami that hit Indonesia. The animals realized something was wrong and they headed for higher ground. How they do this we don't know, but the senses are latent in all of us, because we were once animals ourselves.

Yes, the air feels differently, tastes differently. When it's going to get really bad, all of your senses are screaming, if you're in tune with yourself.
The animals do know. The dog starts pacing, and as you say, the cat hides. When the dog tries to hide, it's time to take cover.
Can you tell I've been through a few bad tornadoes?
