5% of 12 is 0.6 or 3/5, depending on whether you prefer decimals or fractions. Basically, a percentage is simply a fraction with a denominator of 100, so 5%=5/100=0.05. To determine a fraction of a second number, you multiply that number by the fraction. So, you could figure this as 0.05*12 and get 0.6. Or, using fractions, multiply 5/100 by 12 to get 60/100=6/10=3/5. Or, the way I did it, which is reduce first - 5/100=1/20, which when multiplied by 12 gives 12/20=6/10=3/5. You will obtain the same answer no matter which procedure you use for multiplying, so use whichever one you're most comfortable with (although do practice with the fractions, even if you don't like using them - most fractions cannot be represented exactly with any finite decimal, and at higher levels of math, you will find places where it is important to have an exact number and not just an approximation, which makes the use of decimals impossible, so you will need to be able to do fractions at that point). If you're using the decimal method, it's helpful to remember that all you need to do to convert a percentage into a decimal is move the decimal point two places to the left. Conversely, if you decide to use fractions, learn to look for common factors and signs of divisibility - in this way, you can reduce the fraction promptly at each step and keep your numerators and denominators small, and therefore easier to work with.

Percentage means, per hundred. so 5% implies 5 parts per 100. Now coming to your problem, 5% of 12 would imply 5 parts of 12, which has been divided into a hundred parts. So divide 12 by 100. You get 0.12. This is one part... Now you need 5 parts, so, multiply it with 5, and bingo...!!! The answer's 0.6

To find a given percentage of given number you can follow the following formula:
m/100 x z
where "m" is the percentage and "z" is the number from where you obtain the 5%.
so:
5/100 x 12 = 0.6
Answer: 0.6

It is not so complicated as you think!

5% is the same as if you say: How many fives you have in a hundred or: 5/100 or even 0.05!!

So 5% of 12 is the same as 5X12/100=0.60 or you can multipy 12 by 0.05=0.60

You take 12, and divide it in half, which is 6.
Then you move the decimal point to the left one space, and get .6.

I used to be able to our state tax like that before they raised it.
