The top of a vertical fencepost is 3m, 12 cm (3 meters, 12 centimeters) above level ground. At 9 a.m., the shadow of the fencepost is 7m, 32 cm long. At the same time, the shadow of a nearby building is measured to be 97m, 40 cm long. How tall is the building, correct to the nearest cm?

Wouldn't a simple ratio work?


3.12/7.32 = x/97.40, solve for x = 41.51 m

or 41 m 51 cm.

cross-multiply
(3.12*97.4)=(7.32*x)
(303.888)=(7.32*x)
(303.888/7.32)=x
