We are here to learn that it is a great mistake trying to be an enjoyer and controller and not serve the Supreme Lord. Because of this bad choice, we were put into the material world, covered by miserable material bodies and ignorance. In this ignorance we forget our eternal, spiritual nature and our eternal, blissful relationship with the Lord. When we wake up again and realize we cannot be happy here, we seek out spiritual life and a spiritual master. The Lord, seated in our hearts, witnesses our desire and makes the arrangements for us to meet His devotee so we can further spiritual progress.
The material world is a kind of prison house meant to rectify us. The suffering of birth, death, disease and old age plus all the other miseries of this world are there for a reason. This world is not meant to be happy place for us to enjoy life. Rather, we should understand the real nature of this world, that there will always be suffering here, and not waste our time trying to be happy here. The best plan is to become self-realized and re-establish our relationship with the Lord in pure devotional service. If we do that we can go back to the Lord at the end of this life and never have to take birth here again.
