My son has had one since he was 4. I had quite a bitter split from my wife and it was easier all round if I didnt have to go through her to speak to him. He doesnt take it to school or anything like that it is putting him in the firing line for thiefs and muggers. He is 7 now.

i wondered this, i would say 13, as any younger they are not out late or alone without a adult for long. too many kids these days have mobiles as young as 5, why??? my daughters 1 at the moment, but im sure i will be by her side at the age of 5, i say let kids be kids if they have a flash mobile (they wont want a cheap one) no doubt they will loose it or get it stolen from them

age?...hmmmm... very good question it depends on circumstances in family...busy parents always out of town age of the kid should be at least when they are 10 yrs old.lots of activities then and also just getting intouch whenever. Stay home mom or dad, well better give cell phone on the age of 15 only used it when out with friends so you know where they are at... not very reasonable to use inside house specialy if there is a home phone. limit call, limit expenses well trained saving kids for the future. enjoying being inside family time, vacation time and friends time. mostly this is just good for communicating with parents...(don't bug the hell out of them though)

I would say that when a child begins middle school, s/he needs a cell phone. Middle school is when there starts to be more after school activities and kids start to get more independent, and having a cell phone just makes it easier on everyone involved.

A child does not need a mobile phone; it will be a magnet for theft, abuse, bullying, fustration, stress... it's a complete waste of time and money. If you're not certain your child will be safe then you shouldn't let them out of your sight.

When they are old enough to go out on their own at night and you'll feel happier knowing they can call in an emergency or you can call them when you start worrying.

But probably should be around early teens and make them pay the bills out of their pocket money so they earn some respect for it !
