I don't think people who are not former smokers can answer this question.

I know u dont want to hear this but i just stopped cold turkey. Most people are expecting some magical thing to help them quit but basically even if u use the patch, pills etc...... "you" still have to do it yourself. It takes ALOT of will power, i'm not going to tell you it's easy because it is not. I smoked for 19 years and i've been quit 4 1/2 years now. You just have to put it in your mind that those "cancer sticks" are not worth rising ur health over and that you are not going to smoke any more!!!!! Every time u start to think of a cigarette then force your mind onto some thing else. Pray alot, do things u enjoy that you cant do while smoking (such as swimming, taking a relaxing bath, etc...). But most of all remember that many people before u have quit and YOU CAN TOO!!!! Good luck and God bless!

I've tried everything - Wellbutrin, patch, hypnosis, cold turkey, american lung association program - nothing worked. Someone answered that it is not an addiction and can be replaced with something else - like sewing. How I wish that were true. There are no easy answers and those of us who smoke know it is terrible for our health, but it is easier to pull teeth with cooked spaghetti than stop.

Smoking is not an addiction, as much as everyone would like to say it is, it's not. The only reason people feel like they cannot quit is because their minds and body have gotten use to the taste, and the body motions. To quit smoking all you have to do, is pick up another habit, sewing, writing, painting, cooking, etc. Next time you go to buy a pack of cigarettes, imagine a lung turning black and falling apart like ashes. That's what every puff is doing to your lungs.

I smoked for ten years. I even smoked after I had both my children but then one day I just said to myself and God that I was going to stop smoking no matter how hard it was going to be. Its all in the mind. If you can control your mind you can control anything about yourself. I want to live as long as possible for my children. My husband still smokes and he smokes around me and it's hard some days but other days I want even think about it. I have been smoke free for about 5 months now. Amazing! You can do it if you really want to.

It was hard, hard, hard. It took six months of trying every day to quit. I just used my own personal determination - and economics.
I was in the US Army in Korea. Cigarettes cost ten cents a pack if I bought a carton at the PX.
When I returned to the US, I stopped at a cigarette machine to buy a pack. It cost 75 cents. I was stunned.
I am so glad I do not have to by cigarettes at a machine today. The daily shock would kill me.

My husband and I smoked for over 25 years. We used the patch. If you don't really want to quit though, it won't work. We have been free for 10 years now. It's GREAT

My mom quit when the doctor told her they saw something in her throat. Scared her to death, and she decided this was her life that was on the line. God forbid it takes that kind of wake up call to get you to stop, but think about that.
The lump in her throat went away, thank goodness.

former smokers? - I don't see how anyone could get used to the smell and taste. I tried a couple times, but it was disgusting.
