The best way would not be to blow it up because then you have bajillions of small asteroid pieces, many of which could still be big enough to be dangerous to Earth.
You could land a rocket or a bomb on it and set it off. That should change its path so that it doesn't hit the Earth.

1.Powerful lazers aimed at the meteor from outer space if we know the path of the meteor and approx. how far away it is.
2.Blow it up with a sonic blast. That will involve magnets & sound.

At first, we need a way better detection system.
Billions need to put in that project, not 'millions'.
To protect us from a huge meteor we need supplementary tens (if not a few hundred) of billions to create special space ships with powerful nuclear/fusion bombs.

Maybe set up an early detection system so we will know when it is coming. Hopefully by then we will be able to live on outposts on other planets or space stations.

It can't. If they try the "Let's blow the sucker up" thing, just picture the earth getting hit by king-sized buckshot. And it it's big enough, they can't blow it up.
About the only thing that can be done is watch it and say, Oh, ****."

Build giant rockets on other planets & moons & shoot them off on an intercept coarse! Heck, use Pluto! It isn't a planet anymore... =-(
