Thomas Jefferson was the one who introduced the law of separation of church and state. People at that time were wanting to make federal holidays out of church holy days, and he felt that would push it too far.
In the 21st century, because morality is becoming such an issue and lawmakers are wanting to put limitations on what people can do with their bodies, etc... many people are crying about the separation of church and state.
Actually, Thomas Jefferson did NOT mean that laws could not be passed which limited the behavior of the people based on morality. He simply did not want any of the organized churches to create national holidays, or to have any part in governing the country, such as they do in most other countries of the world. Religion and morality are not the same thing at all.

I think Thomas Jefferson (dead for several centuries before the 21st) now limits his role to appearing on US currency. He is very popular there but has no other present role.
