There are multiple reasons that tile is used within a tunnel system. For one the kind normally utilized is sound absorbing. Additionally, they make it easier to see an oncoming problem that one would miss with wood or concrete, such as a water leak or cracks in the foundation, whcih would loosen a tile and they would fall off, now we know there is a potentiel problem. Also they are pourous and can absord or assist in filtering out the fumes and gasses.

most tunnels are tiled because if a possible flash flood were to occur, the tiles could withstand the water unlike dirt which would turn to mud

I think it's b/c they are very low maintenance. They reflect light, and are impervious to the water that might leak in from the ground above.
