Sony, Dell, HP and IBM all make small units. If you can live without the DVD or CD then they get even smaller and lighter. I'd check out the battery life if that is important in your school environment? Depending upon your budget you might consider refurbished. Word processing does not take much CPU power and wifi can be easily added to older laptops.

Someone mentioned Sony.
Don't go for Sony. They use(d) malware on their audio CD's and won't admit it's a wrong technique in itself. Right now Sony needs to be boycotted.
Better look at Dell or Toshiba.

how small? if you mean like 12 inch screens then you can try the dell inspiron 710 my brother has it for college and it works fine
