(3) how far away are the Keys from Miami? should I go there?
Add anything else that you think a first timer should know when travelling to Miami (I'll be driving my own car and will need a decent hotel to stay at).

(1) Must go places in Miami? - Miami Beach there is the area of Miami that is most famous from TV and the Movies, and that area is called "South Beach". South Beach is where all the art deco hotels are and all the neon, it is also popular for it's gorgeous beach.
(2) Beaches in Miami are far superior to Daytona
(3) The keys are only an hour and a half drive from Miami, but there are many keys! to get all the way to Key West (the furthest key from Miami) it can take up to two and a half hours! If you are just going to Key Largo for example, your drive is much shorter.
Advise on Miami, and staying there cheap...
The cheapest places to stay in the popular South Beach area are hostels. There are some great hostels there and they are so nice that if you get a private room you will have both privacy, and a good deal. Since Hotels are crazy expensive in South Beach, I suggest going with hostels.
The best hostel is The Clay hostel/hotel. There are a few to choose from though. Links below to the hostel information...

Miami is an awesome place- but it depends on what you like etc. Not to mention, its so trendy now which is annoying I think. If you like the SUN youll like Miami.
Daytona is a cool place too. The water is not as BLUE AS MIAMI. Miami has much nicer water.
Unless you start early and are sober and/or with others, I d say the Keys are a two day trip. For sure.

1) lincoln street in south beach. its closed off to cars and there is great people watching there.
2) i've never been to daytona, but the beachers there are amazing. south beach can be crowded, so go up to north miami beach. its just as nice.
3) the keys are about 2 1/2 hours away. you can do it in a day (which i have), but it is not worth it. it is best just to go down to key west and stay a couple of days or skip it. is you do decide to go down to the keys, go to john pennekamp state park in key largo. if you love snorkeling, this place is great.
