I would suggest two steps:
First, delete any files, links, etc... that you consider private and then run an eraser utility to overwrite the resulting free space on your hard drive. A good program for this, which allows several security levels by the number of times overwritten, is Eraser which is free and can be found at:

You can actually use Eraser to delete / overwrite the files at the ame time and then use it to wipe the free space.
Then, second, if you want to be really secure, re-partition and re-format the drive.

if you want to reuse it http://www.cyberscrub.com has software that can erase the files to the guttmann security standard or try http://www.webroot.com window washer utility it can erase an entire harddrive to the point of getting rid of the File Address System file and the Master Boot Record.
My solution to DESTROYING a hard drive would be to install AOL.exe and take to gun range and use one or more of the following weapons: glock 6, 22 pistol, 22 shotgun, 45 berreta, semi-auto and or full auto, .44, 357 magnum, AK 47, M16, or even a BB gun, but any of the other postings in this thread would also work. Another option you could try is to disasemble it and cut the metal plates inside it with metal cutting shears.

I like this feel-good method...
1) Open up drive and remove platters
2) Using an oxy-acetylene torch, melt them (glowing red is fine).
You can also use some utility software to scrub the drive, but it is not nearly as much fun.

DBAN will wipe to department of defense standards. you only need to download the file copy it to a floppy disk make sure your computer is set to boot to floppy first and type autonuke at the prompt.

I take ALL my used computer parts to loal churches that have experts volunteer there time and "clean up" ery thing on them then use the donated parts to build pc for the les fortunate....Ah hell Dude SMASH THAT MUTHAFUKKA WITH HAMMER
