Really its quite simple to boot your computer, that simply means turn it off then back on again. But I'm assuming you mean how do i reboot into safe mode and again that's pretty simple. Since i do not know which operating system you have i will just give you the generic instructions, how to do so.

Reboot your computer in safe mode

That will show you how to boot into safe mode smile.gif

Backing files up again it comes down to which operating system you have. Are you running xp, Win 98, Win 95 or others? When you post back i can give you a little more info from there.

Good luck.

XP huh?
One of my computers in my office is having the same problem. every once inawhile the start options for shutting down or restarting are blacked out.
I suggest making a batch file and using:
shutdown.exe -s -t 03 -f
in the command. this will shut down your computer with a 3 second warning.
here is the actual documentation from microsoft that I have found on the problem. It works, but doesn't last:
"Shutdown" option missing from the Start Menu and Ctrl+Alt+Del dialog box

if cant see the start menu could try pressting CTRL + ALT + Delete and select restart.

might be that you have moved the scroll bar off the screen so if you move mouse right to bottom of screen, if you get an up down arrow left click mouse button and drag up and then release button - should now have your start bar back

Its usually under 'turn off' but if your start bar is vanished, make sure you don't simply have it slipping down out of sight.

If its gone completely, you're having troubles.

Use the reboot button. Its usually a small button near the computer function lights.

Should be under start, shutdown then select restart. Or Ctrl, Alt Del then select shutdown and select restart

Press the mains button - hold it in. Or press ctrl+alt+delete and then shut down or restart. Or if you have windows press the window key on your keypad then go shut down.

I think you accidently hid your bottom toolbar. Go to the bottom of the screen and look for your arrow icon to turn into an up arrow at the very bottom of the screen. Click and drag upward to show your toolbar again.

Peter,

If you wanna set your pc to factory setting just do a system restore.

Go to START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>SYSTEMTOOLS.

at the bottom you will see System restore, pick a date you want to restore it from then hey presto.....takes a while tho.
