Under $1000, Epiphone Les Paul, or Fender (Squier) Strat.

Both could be considered rock guitars, or country, or jazz. Very versatile. The Strat is more coutoured (rounded edges) so I think it's more comfortable to play than a Les Paul.

The best thing you can do is go visit some music shop's. The more different types of guitars you try, the better. A wise salesman once told me to not only go by price and sound, but also by whether or not I liked the way it looks when its strapped on to me. The idea being if it looks cool and inspires/tempts you to play/practice more, then thats a good guitar. Another thing is, do you already have an amplifier? If you are just starting to learn and cant afford an amplifier, you might consider getting a good quality acoustic guitar to learn on. No amplifier required and your parents/neighbors will like it better as well.
Lastly, recruit a friend that has been playing guitar for a long while. Or a guitar teacher. Check out some used guitars. You might find a great deal on a quality guitar. But have someone knowledgeable on guitars to check it out before you buy it. For instance, one of my favorite electric guitars is a fender american standard strat that I picked up used for $450.00 in a music store. Its an excellent guitar. But, in terms of generic recommendations... Ibanez, Yamaha, Peavey and Epiphone would be good starting points. If your into metal or hard rock etc., stick with a guitar with humbucking pickups as they "generally" have a higher output which results in better overdriven/distorted sounds.

A good starter guitar is a Squire Strat. They are around $200 new or $100 used. They look like the more expensive Strats, only the picky musicians in the audience will know the difference.

Peavy makes some good, affordable guitars. I had a Predator, it was about $200 and I loved it.

are you a beginner or what. For cheaper stuff go for an Ibanez, they seem pretty good for the price. I'm personall a fan of Fenders Stratocaster but thats like $700 bucks. I wouldnt recommend a Fender Squier since there pretty hard to play on, but really cheap($100 dollars). Epiphone makes decent stuff.

BTW it also depends what you want type of music you want to play and your guitar level.

if you a beginner, a good very basic guitar is a low-end johnson or fender. I know a lot of beginning garage band kinds that have cheap Cort guitars but i personally think they are icky. im selling one if you want to email me? really if your starting off in a band you''ll want a reasonable amp so that the rest of the band can even hear you. aim for spending $100-$200 for a reasonable first guitar. good luck with the band! scarlett.begonias@yahoo.com for a very pretty green Johnson guitar, hand painted :-)
