that largely depends on the character encoding used. A single ascii character takes up a byte of space.

byte...which is typically 8 bits. Although, used to be there was a 7 bit byte until it standardized to the 8. Each bit contains either a 0 or 1 ....hence the name b(inary) (dig)it.
