Queen Latifah has recorded a version of this song on her The Dana Owens album of 2004. It is an album containing her covers of various classic songs. DJ Sammy has also recorded a version.

Recently, there was a song with "California" in its name that is done by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, which might be the song you're thinking of.
