To Kill A Mockingbird
For some reason this book was not an assigned reading book when I was in middle and highschool. So I did not read it - because I had seen the movie several times (which is a great movie, by the way). So I read this book in adulthood. When I finished the book - I cried!!!! I have reread this book many times since then. This book really touched my heart.

There is no possible way to pick just one. I think I have a real problem with reading books, I just cant seem to stop. I will stay home all weekend holed up in my house just reading 24/7. I am not kidding. Sometimes I wont even go outside all weekend! Anyway, if I had to recommend just one book it would probably have to be something by Wilbur Smith, like River God or Elephant Song. But I also might recommend Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M. Auel. This book is awesome and there are 4 more after that so there is no way you could just read one.

There are a lot of good ones out there. The best one I've found was King Fortis the Brave by LaMontagne and Snyder. It's about a pair of twins that are pulled into a magical land where they find themselves caught in the middle of a battle for control of the realm. The boy twin, Rodney, is mistaken for King Fortis, an Arthur-like figure that is to someday return in the time of the land's greatest need. It's really a great book full of humor and adventure. I recommend it to my students all the time and have had students that really hate to read come back and tell me how much they love it.

I would normally recommend an obscure book or some Henry Miller but I'll just go along with the trend. Read the Bible, even if you're an atheist like me. Alot of authors, even non-Christian ones, take a lot from the Bible. It's not the greatest book in the world but it's influential.

Ask me in 20 years, then I'll say :
"My book.", and my reason would be because that way, I get a lot of money because people are buying my book.
But for the present time :
Depends on where the person is in life, i.e. how far he/she has come or still has to go and what he/she has experienced, on the person's outlook on life, and on how well I know the person.
There is no single book for everyone. Different people respond differently to different books, and therefore need different recommendations.

I would recommend The White Dragon By Anne McCaffrey. It is fantasy and it is about a boy born from a dead mother by a rough caesarean who wins the lordship of a province just by being born a boy. He has a guardian who treats him like a dying child, because he was born premi and not expected to live. the boy grows up a little and unexpectedly impresses a dragon, the most unlikliest and never seen before kind of dragon, a white dragon. It is a sweet story that catches at your heart.

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. Excellent example of dystopian fiction. I've probably read it 10 times. Shows what could happen if ultra-conservative Christianity got out of control and took over.

Animal Farm by George Orwell
It has some fabulous lessons that we could take to heart politcally and personally. I think that anyone (old enough to understand) could totally benefit from this story.
