the cheapst laptops that you can get that are good are toshiba and dell.

Then new dell of Hp laptops are fine. Personally am using a compaq (hp) nc8230 laptop and enjoy it. Of course it is a little more costly than you may want to spend but there are plenty of cheap laptops at both locations one such is http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/featured_basnb?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
any of these will work just fine

i got my brother a hp zd8000 with a tv tuner/dvr 160gb hd
dvd burner with lightscribe 3.2ghz processor and 1gb RAM
for only $1299 that maybe alot of money but not for that laptop
they have all kinds of deals in all price ranges
