Swelling during pregnancy can be very normal. People often complain that the swelling is worse on one side. Although it can be very normal, it can also be a sign of preeclampsia, or as they used to call it, toxemia. Your friend should see her OB and have her blood pressure evaluated. Always better to be safe than sorry in pregnancy.
The swelling can go on, and actually get worse, for a couple of weeks after the baby is born. This is caused by a massive fluid shift after delivery. All the extra fluids that have been going to the uterus and the baby during the pregnancy shift, and go to the periphery, causing swelling of the feet, hands, and face.

Believe me, you'll know. The pain will be worse and there will be a tightening in your belly. It will start out small and build in pain and intensity of the muscle contraction. There is really no way to describe exactly what it feels like because it's different from any other type of pain. If it's labor the pains will come at somewhat regular intervals. You should probably start labor within the next week. Good luck !

Water retention but she needs to see a doctor as it could be an indication that her kidneys are not working properly.
