There are 4 dimensions, x, y, z and time.
mathematically there can be an infinite number.
However, string theorys need 8 to 11 (depending on the one you read). According to the theorys, these are real BUT they are very small so you don't see them.
Kind of like looking at a power line from far away. It looks like the line has only thickness and length. But it's third dimension is "wrapped" around. THe higher dimensions according to the theorys are "wrapped" similarly. If we coud look close enough (?) maybe we coiuld see them but for now, they only exist in theory.

M theory predicts 8 to 11 dimensions. A common misconception is that time is one of these dimensions. Time is not a dimension at all actually. It is the interpretation of change to our brains and does not exist outside the mental capacity of people.

There have recently been 11 dimensions discovered (ie. thought of)
They are all listed here:
http://fractalicawakening.com/11dims.htm
If you have a Masters degree in advanced science you might even be able to understand one or two words of it.
Personally I think there is another dimension that can be travelled through. If you think about it-
a 2-d figure on a 3-d sphere will run around it for infinity because he doesnt know of the existence of the 3rd dimension/
similarly 3-d people (us) run about a 4-d sperical object (space) for infinity because we dont know how to travel through the 4th dimension.
Think about that.

A 'dimension' is any measurement that is independent of all other measurements. For example: age, height, weight, hair color, and eye color define a 5 dimensional space. (Yes, you have to have some way to 'measure' hair color and eye color. Those are called 'metrics')
I'm not sure how many 'dimensions' they're up to with sub-nuclear particles. I know there's mass, charge, spin, color, charm, flavor, and strangeness. But there may be others. And the words don't really relate to anything except a mathematical abstraction. Something that cannot be 'derived' from the other measurements.

There are three room dimensions. up-down, right left, back-forth.
There is also time.
There exists theories of more dimensions, but there is no proof of their existence.

Doesn't string theory postulate eleven or more? I have to confine myself to the usual five, or I'll get a headache.

I know 4 have been definitely proved.
Up - Down.
Left - Right.
Forwards - Backwards.
Time.
