I agree, some people can't work due to illness but there is a large amount of people claiming benefits who do it because they know they dont have to work and still get money. The government should stop paying people who COULD work but don't, and for those who cant find work they should be made to do community work in exchange for the benefits.

Some people become unemployed through no fault of their own,and i myself was laid off last year and had no job for about 8 weeks and was eventually forced to sign on as my savings run out.All the time though i was looking for work as hard as i could and eventually found the job i am in now.Genuine people should be helped, like myself, having contributed lots by way of taxes in the past, but the spongers and people that are lazy and dont even try to find work, should be made to earn their benefits.Look at the streets around us....quite often dirty and littered with rubbish.Get them cleaning up,helping the sick and old with everyday chores etc.Not only will they gain the respect of others, but put something back into the community, instead of staying in bed all day, then staying up all night either drinking, drug taking or other nocturnal activities, quite often criminal. As for immigrants well i have nothing against them, but i believe that if they cant afford to support themselves when they enter this country then they should get nothing in the way of benefits for at least 2 years, and only then, if during this time they have paid taxes and so helping to pay their way and supported themselves and their families.

Many do charitable work that doesn't appear as a tax credit or a kudos next to their name. If you had to pay all the people who volunteer at hospitals, old age homes, school, etc, your taxes would be over the moon. Just because someone is "unemployed" doesn't mean they just sit on their *** and do nothing. Some volunteer to help their elderly neighbours or friends with house in the yard or shopping or help with personal community projects. Most never get any recognition for their hard work. Maybe if local communities made it easier to help out people would.

In 1960s Britain unemployment was typically 500,000; standard tax rate was 45p in the £ and the highest personal tax rate was 95p in the £.

Now there are never less than about 1,500,000 unemployed, even allowing for constant massaging of the figures, the highest personal tax rate is 40p in the pound and the standard rate is 23p in the pound.

This shows that the moaners have got it completely back to front; that when you reduce personal taxes the unemployment rate goes UP, NOT DOWN.

Only two explanations are possible: the lower that personal taxes become the higher unemployment becomes OR

The higher unemployment grows, the lower personal taxes become.

Either way the taxpaying moaners should be PRAYING that unemployment continues to rise, the higher it goes the less tax they pay!

When we work we pay unemployment tax. If we become unemployed we draw on that insurance. That is totally different than welfare.

I collect disability from the military and get social security from over 30 years of working. You think I should have to do community service?

Welfare is to keep people from starving, and most state do have welfare to work programs. There are people in life that are unable to work because they are mentally challenged, we as a society have a responsibility to care for these people.

I understand your frustration when people abuse our generosity and take advantage of the system. These people will sooner or later get caught.

Yes,if they are unemployed through no fault of their own.If everyone in the country were working,do you honestly think your taxes would be lowered? The answer is a definate no,because no government in history has ever had eneough money, your tax would be spent on more bombs, more battle-ships,bigger,& more, government buildings, higher salaries for politicians, the list is endless. The government does not allow you to survive with-out benefits. If you try to feed yourself by fishing, hunting etc.you'll find that some-one owns or controls the land & rivers.Get wood from a forest and build yourself a hut?Not allowed. Some jobs are paid so low that you actually have to get government benefits to survive.Imagine working your guts out all week & not being able to survive on your earnings.

The last job I applied for, so did over 2000 other people.
If I do work experience I am considered 'not available for work' and don't get paid for that week.
I pay tax NOW. It is not 'value added tomatoes'.
You think this way because you imagine it will never happen to you, and that we are all scroungers. There is no job security any more. But its easier to blame the unemployed than face the fact that it could happen to you.

Because they aren't supposed to be here in the first place! I say ship 'em back...Can't barely feed my own family, and I gotta worry about taking care of their sorry @$$'s!!!!!

And I think I misread your question...WTH do unemployed have to do with immigrants? Lazy slobs need to get a job, people who are out of work or laid off due to their job situation deserve unemployment...Heck, they DID pay into it, why shouldn't they be able to collect? Why don't they get a job at Burger King you ask? (1) As said previously, they already paid in, so why shouldn't they collect. (2) They are usually able to make more money through collecting, because the pay is based on a percentage you have received in pay the last year, then they would working at Burger King...no offense to anyone who works at Burger King. Where else would us lazy Americans get our burgers? LOL

Here in Illinois, the unemployed have to pay a federal tax of 10% of their benefits...and the most you can get is only $326.00 per week with payments made out only once every 2 weeks.

I am sure there are many able bodied unemployed people who could easily do a little community service in exchange for their money.
They could collect litter, sweep the streets, mow grass at parks or for OAPS etc. Nothing too difficult but just something little to help eke out the coffers a little.
Although I am sure there would also be those among them that would suddenly develop bad backs etc.
