One song that comes to mind is by singer/song writer/pianist Ben Folds.

The name of the song is Fred Jones Pt. 2.

It isn't your usual love-sick sad song that mopes about asking "why me?"

Rather, the song is a tale of an old man being forced into early retirement.

Here is a sample of the lyrics that I can recall from memory: "Fred sits alone at his desk in the dark. There's an akward young shadow who waits in the hall. He has cleared all his things and he's put them in boxes- things that remind him that life has been good. Twenty five years, he's worked at the paper, the man's here to take him downstairs.CHORUS: And I'm sorry, Mr. Jones, It's... time.

There was no party, and there were no songs, 'cause today's just a day like the day that he started. No one is left here that knows his first name, and life barrels on, like a runaway train- where the passengers change, they don't change anything. You get off, someone else can get on. And i'm sorry, Mr. jones, it's... time......"

There is more, and it only get more depressing.

----

Furthermore, Ben Folds writes a lot of songs that are pretty sad and or self-reflective. One of his hit songs, with his band Ben Folds Five, entitled "Brick" was written about his former girlfriend having to undergo an abortion, back when they were together.

There are many more songs, as well.

This is an older tune that a lot of young folks have never heard, but it's one of the saddest ballads I know -'Alone Again, Naturally' by Gilbert O'Sullivan.

It's a hard choice. There are a lot of depressing songs out there.Probably the saddest(from my point of view) is Silent Lucidity-Queensryche.
