That has always been one of my biggest problems with the "God exists" idea. It opens up a whole can of worms.

If God created us, and it was because he had some need such as companionship, then he wasn't perfect to begin with - he required something for his completion. And so he created us, and what a horrible companion we've been - humans do all sorts of terrible things - all we could have done is corrupt and pollute him and his universe. But God, being all powerful, wouldn't have created such an awful world.

If he did it as some sort of experiment or test, then he's simply cruel - and what would he need to find out with an experiment anyway, being omniscient?

That leads me to believe that maybe he had some nobler goal in mind in creating us, and it just went horribly wrong. Again, he looks weak - a lot like just another human mucking about.

It just doesn't make sense. There's no way of explaining human existence, in all it's horror and absurdity, as a creation of a perfect, all-powerful, all-knowing God.

I am not addressing IF there is a god.
But if I were the supreme being and existed all alone I would create people for entertainment value. Also, I would want to be top dog but not do any work , so like a company CEO I would create little managers underneath of me to run the show while I sit and watch.

He/She/It Probably created us for the same reason that we keep pets. They are there for our enjoyment.
