Regular "lead" (graphite) pencils are typically made up of graphite, water, and clay. Colored pencils, however, contain wax, pigments, and binders. Some may also contain chalk.

Graphite pencils and typical colored pencils are not the same, nor do they function exactly the same way as we all know (i.e. colored pencils cannot be as easily smudged or blended with your finger). But there is a set of colored graphite pencils called Graphitints made by Derwent.
