It can not be denied that the best was Michael Jordan. Well, at least for the NBA, but there are a lot of talented basketball players in the world. People would go to the games not to see the game itself, but to see Michael Jordan play. And I am glad to of had the privelage of growing up watching him play. I am of the 90s generation.

That question can get a lot of answers and all of them would be good. I believe the best was Magic Johnson. I believe this for a lot of reasons. I will start with this one. He led his team to the finals 9 times in 12 years. 5 championships. The leageu was extremely tough in that era. You had the Larry Bird led Celtics and the 76 ers with DR. J ( Julius Erving). Who could fly in the air farther than anyone, even Jordan. Jordan came along later. One other reason is he played Center against the 76ers in game 6 of the finals as rookie and had one of the most impressive games i have ever seen anyone have. I believe he had like 43 pts , 15 rebounds, 10 assists. ( I am not sure of the exact figures but that would be close. He could shoot , pass, rebound and do anything his team needed him to do on any given night. He was an unselfish player who played to win. And to answer many critics why i would not choose Jordan. For one thing he did not ever play the quality of competition that greats like Bird, Johnson, Dr. J and a lot of others faced. The 90s just had no really competitive teams. Now their have been a lot of great players and to mention a few. Russell, Chamberlain, Abdul- Jabbar, West, Baylor, Oscar Robertson, Dr J, M. Johnson, Bird, and still a lot more .

The problem I have with Jordan is that the rules were changed. If he played back in the time of Oscar Robinson, he would have been constantly charged with travelling (i.e., taking too many steps) and palming the ball..
Offense - Magic
Defense Bill Russell (one tough and mean dude)
The other mentionables on offense, Jordan, Bird and Big O. Nobody was like Russell on defense.

Lebron James.... the last 5 minutes of the game yesterday he showed me why he is the best ever.... 6'8 monster dribbling through the whole greece team and scoring at will while the rest of the US team looked on..The dunk he had at the end was unreal. The athletic abilty he has sets him apart from everyone.

Talk about clutch:
Bill Russell was 10-0 in game 7's.
Eight straight championships..
Eleven in his 13 year career...
Won back-to-back NCAA championships at U.S.F. before joining the NBA (also, incidentally, won an Olympic Gold Medal)...
He was the first player to win an NCAA, Olympic Gold and NBA Championships in one year.
