(81 Honda Civic 1500,carberated,electric fuel pump near the tank.new timing belt)
my car has been stalling every few miles and I would let it set for a few minutes and it starts,today it stalled out again but did not start back up for about 3 or four hours and when I finally got it started it sounded like backfiring but wasnt as loud and I couldn't give it gas,it was sputtering the whole way home.When I let the car idle it was ok .

if you really wanna save this car listen to those guys. In my opinion though, even with Honda's incredible long-life cars, this one has far out-lived itself. Never heard of anyone owning a honda as old as yours.

Get the distributer looked at.
Most cars 80 and up have a computerized distributer.
When they go bad they tell the computer that the motor is not running.
Computer tells the flue pump to shut down causing your car to stall.
Warning the part is expensive.

It sounds like you may have an injector bad, or maybe just a bad connection. Check all of your plugs to make sure they are secure. You may need to have your base idle adjusted. Also, you could have gotten some bad gas. Put some fuel system cleaner in it.
