I have been involved in three wrecks over the past three years and in each one with an elderly person. None of which were my fault.
It is becoming more apparent that elderly people pose a real danger to other drivers. I am just looking for other people's thoughts on this matter. I also think it strange that they enjoy lower insurance rates.

Yes!!!! Everyone blames kids for high insurance, but elderly are just as bad. I work as a drive thru bank teller, and I can't believe some of the old people who are still driving. We had an old lady come into the lobby once and leave, and she came back ten minutes later and asked if we knew whether she drove there or walked. Then she found her keys, and said, "Oh, here they are. I must have driven." SCARY!!!

A few years back a senior citizen drove to the dmv to take her driving test. She failed and she was allowed to drive the car back home. On the way she ran over and killed a baby in a stroller going through a crosswalk. Another case was a man plowing through a crowded farmers market killing 10 people! He said he pressed the gas pedal by mistake. He wasn't even put in handcuffs. I would take it a step further: his family knew his driving skills were falling apart after backing through the garage wall and they did nothing. Families of elderly people have to be just as responsible. Old people are not going to give up their cars until they are taken away from them. With the baby boom generation entering old age this will become a big debate. Good question!

I agree totally. It seems that every accident in the paper lately involves elderly people. Also in my area in the past year about 3 elderly people drove there car into various businesses. All because they used the gas instead of the brakes.

They have a whole South Park episode of the dangers of the elderly drivers.

There are a variety of factors that affect a person's ability to drive (Medical, Driving Skills, Personal Choices).

It isn't just the elderly who are causing the roads to be so dangerous. When was the last time you saw grandma driving 80MPH ?

I feel the frequency which you are 'tested' to keep your driver's license should be directly corelated to the number of warnings, moving violations, and accidents you have.

Certain violations and accidents are a direct result of inattention or poor driving skills: Failing to stop for a red light, Failing to stop for a stop sign, turn signal violations. By using the number of violations and or accidents you can judge which drivers are causing the problems without discriminating against age. The fear of having to "reapply and test" for your license might encourage some to slow down, and follow the law.

In the case of accidents, I think that you should have to submit to re-testing when it has been determined you are at fault for the accident. The people that are in a high number of collisions, but have never been 'at fault' should also be re-tested. I have a few friends who never 'caused' an accident as far as it can be proven, but they drive like idiots and must share in the blame.

I agree, it's because they can get their license through the computer. I have a friend that was in a serious accident a couple of months ago. This man that hit her was 80. He had been in 3 wrecks before he wrecked into her 2 were fatal.

Out of the two, i could wager inebriated drivers. There are injuries in all age communities yet inebriated using is a few thing that doesn't even might desire to ensue. i think of everybody might desire to be required to have a psychological and actual examination a minimum of each and every 2 years to be certain in the event that they are nonetheless able to force precise. I even have regularly occurring 2 young infants killed through fact of the two varieties of drivers. a university mate of mine became basically 12 whilst he became walking on the sidewalk in a residental section on a Saturday afternoon. a youthful inebriated women human beings went up on the decrease and killed him prompt. whilst i became 19 and dealing as a automobile-hop, one among my fellow automobile-hops became killed on a similar time as at artwork whilst she became busing some trays. An elderly women human beings have been given her foot on the gas rather of the brake and slammed annoying into the girl who fortunately did not see it coming, she died prompt to boot as she became slammed right into a brick wall.
