A farmer returns from town with the things he just bought: a chicken, a sack of feed, and a fox. To get to his house he must cross a river, but his rowboat is only big enough to carry one item with him.
If he takes the fox, the chicken will be left to eat the feed.
If he takes the feed, the fox will eat the chicken.
How does the farmer get all three things across the river safe and sound?

First, the farmer should take the chicken over the river, as the fox doesn't eat the sack of feed.
Next, the farmer should take the fox over the river, and the sack of feed will be left.
Upon arriving at the river with the fox, he should drop off the fox and take the chicken back over the river.
As soon as he gets to the side he started at, he should unload the chicken and pick up the sack of feed, bringing it to stay with the fox, who will once again not eat feed.
Once that is done, the farmer should cross over once more to pick up the chicken, the only item left.
When all three are safely across, the farmer should continue.

Take the chicken and the fox won't eat the feed. So, all will be safe. Then, take the feed and then the fox or vice versa. Then, all will reach the other side safe and sound, but they'll have a problem on the other side, but who cares? All he wants is to "get all three things across the river safe and sound"-- not necessarily safe on the other side!

first he brings the chicken to the other side.
he crosses the river.
he then brings the fox to the other side.
when he goes back, he brings along the chicken.
then he leaves the chicken and bring the sack of feed to where the fox is.
he goes back to the other side.
then he brings the chicken back to the other side, where he left the fox and the sack of feed.
that way, he has crossed the river along with the chicken, fox and the sack of feed.

He should really tie up both the fox (what's he doing with a fox?) and the chicken; if they can't eat the chicken/feed they'll run away.
