It's inherently sexist. It's always one man and more than one woman. It might be nice for the man if he could afford it, but it really would reinforce the idea of women being subservient to men. There would be a favorite wife and the others would be jealous. The children of the favorite wife would get more of big daddy's attention that the others would. Could there be any real love between (I mean among) a man and a bunch of women? Maybe lots of sex, but what about the love?
After saying all that, I notice that I don't think that government has any moral right to make polygamy illegal, so it must be illegal for financial reasons- social security, life insurance and so on.
I'd probably never try it myself- not as a long-term arrangement.

I think it is ok for the man to have children and all if he is married to the other women as well (as long as he is married to total 4 women).
I'm Muslim and in our religion it is allowed for men to have 4 wives as long as he can financially and emotionally support all of them equally. That bit is something that the western media always leave out when they talk about polygamy in Islam.
The reason for it in our religion is the same reason that men in western countries have affairs and go after many women even though they are married. It is because coz somtimes the wife won't be able to satisfy the man (physically) and so as not to put on a strain on the woman taking another wife is allowed.
A woman cannot have more than one husband at one given time but if she is physically unsatisfied she can ask her husband for a divorce. Islam allows this. Reason for a woman to have only 1 husband at a time is as as if she gets pregnant it would be definitely sure who the child was fathered from.

I think polygamy was acceptable in the past because the male babies were less likely to survive so there was a shortage of males and in order to maintain the population one male had more than one wife. But I don't think it has much place in modern society now we don't have such a high infant mortality rate, it just leaves some men without any wives. Having said that, if its part of another culture, and they are obeying the laws of whichever country they are in, it wouldnt be our place to stop them.

Yes, it's situational. If people will have a better life by being 'married' to more than one person then what is the problem? As long as thier are enough resources for all then go ahead. It might just create problems for the children later inlife if they work thier way into mainstream society, but the impact should be minimal.

There's a lot more that goes along with it. The women there are forced into subordinate roles, they're not allowed to leave their communities, often times, they're abused, they're married off at ridiculously young ages (13 years of age), and sometimes, the kids are born with deformities because of inbreeding. And it's almost impossible to leave, because they're threatened with eternal damnation, exile from their "friends" and family, and the frightening possibility of having to leave one of your kids behind...it's rough--really rough. I'm sure they'd all like to make it seem as though it's a harmless thing, but unless you're a male, the whole thing really sucks.

I like your thinking. Those other women are call comcubines. I'll leave it to a financial planner or tax specialist to figure out which combination of wives/comcubines gaves you the most welfare dollars.
As a poor young male, I'm oppose to polygamy. The rich old guys would hog all the cute young chicks like they did in the old days.

Legally its a nightmare.. morally its indescent, religiously its mortal sin, and ethically its a night mare....If they followed your rules and they can live with it....I think it's a choice. If you can live in that type of life and balance the relationships and everyone is happy...then hey...go for it...but society as a whole can probably never accept it because its taboo and out of the norm...It's no differnet then gay marriages, homosexuals in the military, or same sex childbearing... everyone's got plug ther 2 cents in and bash what they don't understand or like or care to know

Being with underage girls is pedophilia and wrong. I see nothing wrong with adults living however thay choose. It needs to be about love and respect, not control. Also have you considered that a group of several men and women or a woman and several men is also polyamory? It doesn't have to be one man with a harem.

I think polygamy is fine.
If some woman wants to marry a guy who already has 5 other wifes, so be it.
