Rurouni Kenshin - Reminisence (not the other Kenshin)
Cowboy Bebop (by the same makers as samurai champloo)
Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (a good sort of action/comedy)

neon genesis evangelion, full metal panic (funny, but kinda like full metal alchemist in the whole protection thing), the galaxy express ones (queen emeraldas, matel legend, captain herlock, cosmo warrior zero), godanner, gravion, king gainer...
i went with ones my husband really likes that seem semi similar to full metal alchemist & macross... i'm guessing you already know robotec (as that was the predecessor to macross). i hope the list helps!

Escaflowne is a good anime. Cowboy bebop is good too. Ghost in the Shell is my favorite though. it really depends on what type you're looking for. theres so many.
