I'm trying to estimate start-up costs for a business occupying a 1700 sq ft retail space. I need this info for financing. Will a contractor(s) provide estimates even if I haven't signed a lease? Are there any costs that are somewhat "standard", for instance approximately how much does it cost to have a drop-down ceiling installed for x sq ft?

An architect must draw the plans before a contractor can price the job.
Electricity, water, slab, flooring, and all that goes into a building has to be specified.
Fixtures must be considered. Fire sprinklers. If a restaurant, the kitchen is a bunch.

You could be looking at $100-$125 per sq ft. That's a broad range, but it may depend how elaborate the construction, and inside finishing.

If an existing building, it's a toss up for me.
