I am overwieght, and I have been for awhile. I did manage to loose 60 lbs in the two years before getting pregnant, and I lost another 20 in my first trimester from the morning sickness (and working where I use to work).
Getting pregnant was a miracle, and not expecting it (as we'd been together for three years and had tried) I was not covered by insurance at the time I found out.
I go to the health department for everything now, but I feel really weird about the doctor I saw last.
He told me to make sure I eat (as I had been having a lot of problems with keeping anything down). He also told me NOT to increase my excerise, to stay as active as I am until it starts to feel uncomfortable with it down the line.
Then he told me he didn't want me to gain any weight during my pregnancy... any!
Does that mean I actually need to be losing the weight my baby is naturally gaining?
This makes me uncomfortable. How could I have a nice, healthy, natural childbirth if I'm worried about weight?

-- I'm hoping next time around to not have the same doctor, as going to the health department you usually do not.

First, congratulations on your pregnancy!!! Secondly, I think your body will let you know what is right and what is not when it comes to your pregnancy. As long as you eat healthy foods and only eat when you are hungry, you should be fine. If you gain some weight--so what!!! You are making a new human!!! Don't stress about the weight thing...as long as you are eating healthy foods, gaining weight is OK. I'm not saying to ignore your doc's advice on everything...just on this.

This advice sounds absurd. Even for overweight people, they just reduce the amount you are supposed to gain but don't eliminate it entirely. In no case are you supposed to gain less than 15 pounds. Here is a pregnancy weight gain calculator where you can enter your pre-pregnancy height and weight and it will tell you about how much you should gain:

Your doctor sounds like a complete quack. You need to find someone who has read the medical literature in the past 25 years and knows that that is not the way healthy pregnancies work!

If you are significantly overweight, his advice would fit if he told to you to gain less than the recommended 25-30 pounds. It is not healthy for you not to gain at all. He is mistaken. You should gain between 10-15 pounds if you are overweight beginning your pregnancy to minimize the risk of complications for you and your baby. The best of luck to you!

Why are you on yahoo asking this, instead of calling your doctor to demand some clarification of what he meant
