Anyone understand what was going on in the movie Stay?

I've watched it twice and I just can't follow it.It reminded me a little of Jacob's Ladder(though not as good).

basically this guy is plagued by a mental illness and Ewan McGregor tries to help him, but it turns out that all of the characters in the film are intertwined because they all met when Ryan Gosling crashed in the beginning and died...it's kind of backwards...♥
