It has a lot of living stuff in it but the soil itself should not be alive.

No. Just the bacteria and bugs n stuff IN it. I was taught at conservation camp when I was 12 that you can actually eat the soil to survive if need be....we even ate some.....not exactly tasty, but, hey, I didn't die or get sick, either....lol

No, but what's grown on or in it does.

Minerals have no life-force, and soil IS a mineral.
