I work retail and my boss is wanting to call a meeting on Saturday September 16th at 8 am. I was told by one of my co-workers that he and I don't work the opening shift that day and I really don't want to go considering it's 60 extra more miles there and back. Can you think of a good excuse for not going? I have to be at work in 3 hours today and I'll need to have a reason before then.
HELP!

My family is on the other side of the country. So family emergencies wouldn't do. I have to tell her today something that I have to do on that certain date at that time!

Quit your job. If you have to drive 60 miles to go to your "retail job", it's not worth it. Find a crappy job closer to home.

Tell your boss that you are sorry that you are unable to attend the meeting due to previous engagement. Then, you offer to come in to work an hour prior to your shift, so he/she can brief you on the meeting. Your boss should accept that, since you are being responsible and telling the boss in advance rather than waiting til the last minute, the other excuses of Dr appt won't fly to well, since most Dr's don't keep sat office hours.
I am with the others on this one tho, why do you work 60 miles away from home? Can't you find something a little closer???

Tell them you have a medical appointment that day. If they press you for an explanation, mention it is a female exam. That will normally stop all questions. People don't like to get personal about female OBGYN exams.
Something like that is very dificult to reschedule so if you have a female boss she will understand and if you have a male boss he will avoid having to talk about it at all costs!
Good luck!

I have one really good one
I Have Cramps: Before you dismiss this one, think about it: Who can argue? "It's such an embarrassing topic that nobody will ever challenge it," "It's one of those things that men honestly have no clue about, and women can sympathize with." One important point: Don't use this one if you're a man. It'll never work.

you have a doctor's apointment at 9:30 and you can't break it because you'll have to pay since it's not 24 hrs in advance anymore.
you have relative in from Texas (or wherever) and they are leaving on Sunday.

Why don't you ask them if it would be possible to pick another day and time that would fit better into everyone's schedules?

Why don't you discuss this with the manager? Honesty is always the best policy.
