This would be for a 25-30 Gallon freshwater tank.

A filter rated for a tank larger than yours is the first place to start. Look at what the filter is rated for, then go with the one above that size. A Marine Land Bio Filter or a Whisper Filter with a bio bag are good starts. I have also found that adding an undergravel filter to the above works best. Placement of each to complement each other is the key for good water circulation.

The Marineland filters with the bio-wheels that filter at least 180 gph (gallons per hour). You want to turn over the water in your tank AT LEAST 5 times per hour. More filtration is always better than less.

I like cannister filters but i currently use hang on the back filters and they work just fine. For my 37 gallon i use a Whisper 60, for my 30 gallon i use a whisper 60 and for my 20 gallon i use a whisper 40.

Marineland bio-wheel filters are the best option for you here.
