If you're argumentative, you are deliberately taking up a position that is contrary to the person you are talking to. If you're persuasive, you're listening to the person you're talking to and you're trying to get them to see your point of view without attacking or criticizing their opinion.

Argumentative is a negative word applied to people who argue the con point of view. Persuasive is a positive word applied to people who argue the pro point of view.
Both are words used to attempt to bias an observer.

Argumentative is aggressive and usually polarizes both sides, whereas persuasive is non-aggressive with the intent of drawing the otherside onto your viewpoint. Simply put.
